AN.IV.165 Dutiya Khama Sutta Four modes of spiritual progress are enumerated as:
1. impatient mode: those who lack patience when exposed to the cold, heat, hunger, thirst, the contact of mosquitos, wind, sun and creeping things, impatience in the face of insults and impatience in the face of bodily suffering;
2. patient mode: those who have patience when exposed to the cold, heat, hunger, thirst, the contact of mosquitos, wind, sun and creeping things, patience in the face of insults and patience in the face of bodily suffering;
3. taming mode: those who are restrained as to the senses [indriyasa.mvara], and;
4. calming mode: those who do not entertain mind any of the forms of unwholesome preoccupation [akusalavitakka] and who relinquish any sort of wholesomeness that arises.
