A.10_081 Vaahuna Sutta Vaahuna asks the Buddha how many mental states he must be released from in order to attain limitless release from defilements. The Buddha enumerates ten states he must release himself from: 1. visual form [ruupa]; 2. feeling [veda.naa]; 3. perception [sa~n~naa]; 4. mental formations [sa"nkhaara]; 5. consciousness [vi~n~naa.na]; 6. birth [jaati]; 7. aging [jaraa]; 8. dying [mara.na]; 9. suffering [dukkha], and; 10. defilements [kilesa]. Just as a lotus grows up in water but on reaching the surface, rests there unsoiled by that water. 38/255 Dasaka Nipaata, Dutiya Pa.n.naasaka A"nguttara A.i.
