A.10_031 Pa.thama Upaali Sutta The Buddha enumerates the ten principles behind laying down monastic regulations: 1. For the perpetuity of the monastic community; 2. For the convenience and happiness of the monastic community; 3. To control members who take criticism badly; 4. For the convenience and happiness of monastic members who take pleasure in self-discipline; 5. To protect monks from defilements that might arise in the present time; 6. To remove defilements that might arise in the afterlife; 7. For the faith of those who are not yet faithful; 8. For the increasing faith of those who are already faithful; 9.
