AN.IV.41 Samaadhi Sutta | Samaadhibhaavanaa Sutta Four objectives of meditation and the methods by which they can be achieved are enumerated as follows:
1. Meditation for happiness in the present life -- secured by attainment of the four absorptions [jhaana]; 2. Meditation for seeing and knowing -- secured by cultivating consciousnes of light by night and by day; 3. Meditation for mindfulness and self-awareness -- secured by cultivating awareness of the working of the Five Aggregates, and; 4. Meditation for an end of defilements -- secured by cultivating awareness of the arising - working - passing away of the Five Aggregates in the mind.
