AN.IV.40 Udaayi Sutta Asked whether the Buddha praised the practice of sacrifices, the Buddha replies that he does not praise the following four types of sacrifice:
1. sacrifice of oxen; 2. sacrifice of goats and sheep; 3. sacrifice of pigs, and; 4. sacrifice of other animals.
The Buddha says that he does, however, praise forms of sacrifice that are free from butchery -- e.g. offerings made to enlightened arahants which can secure for the offerer, liberation of heart, wisdom and happiness in the hereafter.
