Karma does not become defunct whether in this lifetime [di.t.thadhammavedaniiya], next lifetime [uppajjavedaniiya] or in subsequent lifetimes [aparaaparavedaniiya] without experiencing the results thereof. A disciple whose mind is free of covetousness, vengefulness and delusion but has self-awareness and mindfulness and spreads loving-kindness in all directions. Supposing he spreads loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity in this way since his youth . . . would a person want to do evil deeds? He would do no evil deeds and would not have to suffer the retribution therefrom.
