AN.VII.34 | Dutiya Suvaca Sutta | A devata questions the Buddha as to whether the following seven qualities are for the non-decline of monks: 1. respect for the Buddha; 2. respect for the Dhamma; 3. respect for the Sa"ngha; 4. respect for the Training; 5. respect for meditation; 6. respect for sensativity to self-improvement, and; 7. respect for having good people as friends. The Buddha confirms that these seven qualities are for the non-decline of a monk. Sariputta expands on the Buddha's explanation saying that for each of the seven sorts of respect, "respect" means: having respect yourself; praising the object of respect; encouraging the respect by monks who still lack respect for that object of respect; praising according to reality those who respect that object of respect. The Buddha approves of Saariputta's explanation. | 37/089 | Sattaka Nipaata, Pa.thamapa.n.naasaka | A"nguttara | A.iv. |
