AN.IV.200 Pema Sutta There are four sources of love and hatred:
1. love which originates from love: this is when others treat another with affection who we also like, so we have affection for those others too;
2. hatred which originates from love: this is when we receive less affection from others than the next and out of jealousy we develop hatred for those others;
3. love which originates from hatred: this is when others hate someone we also hate, so we come to love those others as a result;
4. hate which originates hate: this is when others express love for someone we hate so we develop hate for those others.

However for those who have attained absorptions 1 - 4 those forms of hatred and love no longer exist.
