AN.IV.125 | Pa.thama Mettaa Sutta | Those who permiate the four quarters with friendliness can be divided into the following categories: 1. those who spread loving kindness [mettaa] who will consequently be born in the realm of the Brahmas after death; 2. those who spread compassion [karu.naa] who will consequently be born in the realm of the radiant Brahmas [aabhassara] after death; 3. those who spread sympathetic joy [muditaa] who will consequently be born in the realm of the ever-radiant Brahmas [subhaki.nha] after death; 4. those who spread equanimity [upekkhaa] who will consequently be born in the realm of the vehappala Brahmas [vehappala] after death; Those who attain any of these levels through practice outside the Buddha's teaching, when passing away from that existence in the Brahma world, will fall into the unfortunate realms [abhaayabhuumi] -- however, noble disciples of the Buddha who attain these levels will subsequently enter upon parinibbaana. | 35/331 | Catukanipaata Tatiya Pa.n.naasaka | A"nguttara | A.ii. |
