AN.IV.95 | Chavaalaata Sutta | The usefulness of people can be categorized as follows: 1. those who do nothing of benefit for themselves and nothing for the benefit of others (compared to a stump from a funeral pyre -- burning at both ends, covered with excrement in the middle -- which can be used as fuel neither in the village nor in the wilderness); 2. those who do something for the benefit of others but nothing to benefit themselves are superior to the previous; 3. those who do something to benefit themselves but who do nothing to benefit others, and; 4. those who benefit both themselves and others. Each of these categories is successively better than the previous. |
