AN.IV.53 Pa.thama Sa.mvaasa Sutta The Buddha teaches four varieties of cohabitation between husband and wife:
1. Both husband and wife are impure in their Precepts (otherwise known as cohabitation between hungry ghosts [peta]; 2. Husband impure in his Precepts but a wife who keeps her Precepts well (otherwise known as cohabitation between a hungry-ghost and an angelic husband); 3. Wife impure in her Precepts but a husband who keeps his Precepts well (otherwise known as cohabitation between a hungry-ghost wife and an angelic husband), and; 4. Both husband and wife are pure in their Precepts (otherwise known as cohabitation between angels).
