AN.IV.36 Do.na Sutta Seeing the imprint of a 1000-spoked wheel in each footprint of the Buddha (one of the signs of a Great Man), Do.na assumes the Buddha cannot be human and asks whether he is:
1. an angel; 2. a Gandhabba; 3. an ogre; 4. a human. The Buddha replies that he is none of these -- but one in which the defilements leading to rebirth in such forms has been abandoned -- just as the lotus grown up in the water, reaches the surface of the water and stands unsoiled by the water -- in the same way although the Buddha was born in the world, has grown up in the world, the Buddha has overcome the world
