Mahaasaccaka Majjhima Muulapa.n.naasa, Mahaayamaka Vagga MN.036 M.i.237-51 19/108 self-mortification, enlightenment, Middle Way The Buddha recounts his early self-mortification -- and his conclusion that it could not lead to liberation. He describes how the Pañcavaggiyas deserted him in disgust but he persevered with meditation until attaining enlightenment. Saccaka expresses his admiration for the Buddha and acknowledges his superiority over other teachers.
