J.211 Somadatta Jaataka The bodhisatva was born as Somadatta, the son of Aggidatta, a brahmin of Benares. The old man lived by ploughing, and when one of his oxen died, he decided, on his son’s advice, to ask the king for a new one. Somadatta, with great patience, learned all the formalities of the palace, but at the crucial moment when he was supposed to make his petition to the king, he used the word ‘take’ instead of ‘give’. Somadatta’s presence of mind saved the situation. The story was related in reference to Laludayi, who is identified with Aggidatta. 57/321 Jaataka Khuddhaka J.ii.164ff., DhA.iii.123ff. wits
