| A.10_039 | Aanandasa"nghabheda Sutta | The ten causes of schism in the monastic community (sa"nghabheda) are enumerated as follows: 1. when injustice is claimed to be just; 2. when justice is claimed to be unjust; 3. when something not in the monastic code of conduct is claimed to be in the monastic code of conduct; 4. when something in the monastic code of conduct is claimed not to be in the monastic code of conduct; 5. when something which is not the Tathaagata's teaching is claimed to be the Tathaagata's teaching; 6. when something which is the Tathaagata's teaching is claimed not to be the Tathaagatha's teaching; 7. when something which the Tathaagata has never practised is claimed to be something the Tathaagata has practised; 8. when something which the Tathaagata practised is claimed to be something the Tathaagata has never practised; 9. when something which the Tathaagata has never legislated is claimed to be something the Tathaagata has legislated, and; 10. when something which the Tathaagata legislated is claimed to be something the Tathaagata has never legislated. Such claims cause monks in the community to abandon each other, to be divided, not to be able to share in monastic functions, chant the patimokkha separately.
