AN.VII.79 Satthusaasana Sutta Upali asks the Buddha for advice on how he can know whether the virtues to cultivate in seclusion will not be for recklessness, but for striving and definitiveness of mind. The Buddha enumates the following seven indicators -- it should be for: 1. boredom (with sensuality) [nippita]; 2. reduction of sensuality; 3. for extinction; 4. for peacefulness; 5. for ultimate knowledge; 6. for enlightenment, and; 7. for Nirvana. 37/281b Sattaka Nipaata, Unallocated Pa.n.naasaka A"nguttara A.iv.
