AN.IV.169 Sasa"nkhaara Sutta Four manners of final liberation of non-returners [aanaagamii] are enumerated as follows:
1. those liberated in the present life with some effort [sasa"nkhaara- parinibbaayii] -- i.e. those who practice contemplation of loathesomeness of the body [], contemplation of repulsiveness of food [aahaarapa.tikuulasa~n~naa] and awareness of impermanence [aniccaasa~n~naa] -- thus instilling himself with an awareness of death, living on the five powers of a pupil [sekhabala] (faith, modesty, self-restraint, energy and wisdom) and for whom the controlling faculties [indriya] are ripe ;
2. those liberated in the present life without effort -- i.e. those who practice contemplation of loathesomeness of the body [], contemplation of repulsiveness of food [aahaarapa.tikuulasa~n~naa] and awareness of impermanence [aniccaasa~n~naa] -- thus instilling himself with an awareness of death, living on the five powers of a pupil [sekhabala] and for whom the controlling faculties [indriya] are not yet ripe ;
3. those liberated in the present life without effort -- i.e. those who are aloof from sense-desires, aloof from evil conditions, entering on each of the four absorptions in turn, living dependent on the five powers of a pupil [sekhabala] and for whom the controlling faculties [indriya] are ripe, and;
4. those liberated at the breakup of the body without effort -- i.e. those who are aloof from sense-desires, aloof from evil conditions, entering on each of the four absorptions in turn, living dependent on the five powers of a pupil [sekhabala] and for whom the controlling faculties [indriya] are not yet ripe.
