AN.IV.134 U.t.thaana Sutta The four combinations of merit nourishing a person in their present lifetime are enumerated as follows:
1. those nourished exclusively by effort expended in the present lifetime, and not by the merit of previous lifetimes;
2. those nourished exclusively by merit accrued in previous lifetimes, not by the efforts of the present lifetime (e.g. angels);
3. those nourished both by effort expended in the present lifetime and also by the merit of previous lifetimes i.e. royalty and those in positions of power, and;
4. those nourished neither by the efforts of the previous lifetime nor the merit of previous lifetimes i.e. denizens of hell.
