AN.IV.93 Dutiya Samaadhi Sutta Four different categories of attainment in meditation can be enumerated:
1. the attainment of a peaceful mind without insight through supreme wisdom;
2. the attainment of insight through supreme wisdom without peace of mind;
3. the attainment of neither peace of mind nor insight through supreme wisdom, and;
4. attainment of both peace of mind and insight through supreme wisdom.
Anyone who has attained any of these four attainments but cannot maintain it should strive (just as a person whose turban is ablaze strives earnestly to extinguish it) to cultivate their attainment to the point of stability. Even if none of these have been attained, one should still try to attain some of the mental phenomena fully.
